Born in Dublin, Ireland, Ronan Coleman attended the Irish College of Music and began scoring for visual media in 1994.
Hs long standing relationship with sibling documentary team Ruán Magan, director, and Manchán Magan, writer, has seen Coleman develop the unique musical identity of the Global Nomad series of TV documentaries that have received critical and commercial acclaim in Ireland and have been sold to over 25 territories world-wide.
His most recent collaboration with writer/director Ruán Magan titled ‘The Cable That Changed The World’, is a landmark documentary from Tyrone Productions (2024 RTE One, ARTE, BBC NI). The feature length score was recorded by the RTE Concert Orchestra conducted by David Brophy.
Other scoring projects with Ruán Magan include ‘Waterloo’s Warriors’ a gripping docudrama that recounts the crucial role of Celts in Wellington’s victory over Napoleon (Winner Intermedia Globe Gold at Hamburg’s World Media Festival 2016 and Finalist New York Festivals Awards International TV and Films 2016). In addition his work as composer and sound mixer yielded an award for the Magan helmed documentary film “Lifers” (Signis Winner 2014).
In 2019 he produced the opening music to After Parkland that premiered that same year at Tribeca Film Festival.
Coleman scored Gabriel London’s documentary feature “Mind Of Mark DeFriest” in 2014. The film,
thirteen years in the making, has gone on to win Best Documentary Feature LSFF in Dallas, TX, Audience Favorite NIFF in Naples, FL, Best Florida Feature KWFF, FL, and a Top 10 Audience Favorite at Toronto’s Hot Docs Festival. City Drive Films proudly announced the acquisition of the US rights to the multiple-award winning documentary in February 2015. The film chronicles the life of erstwhile Florida prison escape artist Mark DeFriest, as well as the terrifying abuse he experienced during his decades in Florida’s prison system. The film opened theatrically on March 6, 2015 and debuted on SHOWTIME® on March 19.
In composing music for numerous TV shows, he has worked with award winning directors Kim Bartley ‘Far Away Up Close’ and Adam Feinstein ‘Hoodwink’. For ABC he scored the Emmy nominated “Last Days On Earth”.
Coleman has produced music for Edward Burns’ “The Fitzgerald Family Christmas” and scored many successful commercial campaigns for brands including Halle Berry Fragrances, Friskies, Betty Crocker, Jameson Whiskey, Emirates Airlines and the European Environmental Agency.
Under the Crispin Thump moniker, Coleman has co-written and co-produced records for English artist Lydia Baylis and Jasper James. James’ single “It’s On” reached #5 on Billboard’s 2009 Breakout Dance Chart. In addition the Crispin Thump team scored Adria Petty‘s documentary on Paris Hilton “Paris Not France” for MTV Networks.
Ronan Coleman lives in New York’s Hudson Valley. He continues to foster a number of pet projects including an album that fuses electronica with vocal and instrumental recordings of indigenous, minority communities culled from his travels throughout Africa, China, Eastern Europe, Central and South America, the Amazon and the Middle East.
